When people first hear the term Christian Identity, they think that it refers to another Christian denomination, such as Methodist or Baptist. This confusion enables racial supremacists to provide a "religious" cover for their views. The basic belief of the Christian Identity movement is that the Jews are descendants of Satan, and that the real Israelites are the English speaking and Germanic tribes. This idea is derived from the teaching that after the Assyrian captivity the scattered tribes in the Caucasus Mountains, who later settled Europe, were the true Israelites. Blacks, Asians, and other minorities are considered pre-Adam, that is, inferior creations. Some Identity groups have decided that minorities are on the same level as animals, and therefore have no soul. There are variations in teachings with different Identity Churches. Some advocate separation of all the races, while others call for the extermination of all nonwhites.

There seem to be two basic theological paths in Identity. One believes the word Jew is derived from Judah. The tribe of Judah lost its heritage by mixing with the Babylonians and adapting parts of other religions. People following this path many times refer to a Jew as an Edomite. The second path, which is by far the more popular, teaches that Jesus, when talking about the Jews, was literally talking about the descendants of the Devil. Since the Devil is a liar and a murderer, Jews are liars and murderers like their father. According to this belief, Jews became descendants of Satan when Satan seduced Eve and Eve gave birth to Cain. Satan’s plans are to destroy the pure white race by causing other races (called "mud people ) to sexually mix with the white race.

Ku Klux Klan members and neo Nazi followers appear to be strongly attracted to this "religion." In fact, one often observes dual or even triple memberships in these organizations. This makes it difficult to measure how many people actually belong to these groups, since one may be counting the same nose three times.

Lately, there seems to have been an upsurge of recruitment into Identity churches. These groups are trying to draw in the more mainstream middle class, and are having some success. When approached by one of their recruiters, one doesn’t hear about supremacy issues. Instead, talk centers around gun control and other more mainstream issues. Later, the true agendas are presented, after the organization has had time to gain the person’s trust and determine if he or she is open to their racist views.

Much current recruitment seems to revolve around survival materials, especially at exhibitions such as recently occurred in Denver. A wide range of people attend these exhibitions. Some fear that the end of the world is imminent and are waiting for the government to collapse. Others just want to buy materials to be self sufficient. At these exhibitions an Identity group member manning a booth will display materials of general interest. When people stop by the booth and talk to the operator, he or she will size a person up to determine if he or she might be recruitment material. If the prospect is deemed to be a possible member, he or she will be given other publications, which are stored under the table.

Another popular means of recruitment is through the sale of audio and videotapes. The recruiter will approach prospects and ask them to view a tape that has some "stuff" on it, and have the persons give their opinions. Most of the issues on this tape will be of no particular interest to the Identity movement. But if the prospect shows an interest in the one or two that do concern Identity group members, then the recruitment process will go to the next stage, namely, to convince the person that he or she "thinks like we do." If the recruit continues to show interest, he or she will over time be introduced to other issues and ultimately indoctrinated into the Identity philosophy.

As with many cultic groups, supremacists keep people from testing their beliefs against reality by cutting them off from all contact with outside ideas. Members are told that all media and the government are controlled by ZOG, which stands for Zionist Occupied Government. Members are told that Jews control the media and government, that Jews can’t be trusted, and that one shouldn’t associate with race traitors or mud races (mud races are any race other than white). Once this belief is accepted, members rely only on their leader for "true" information. Many families involved with these groups have broken up when spouses have objected to having outside contact. Again, the similarity with many cultic groups is evident.

Many communities don't realize that they have Identity churches in their midst. Typically, an Identity group will look and sound like a fundamentalist Bible church, masking what they are really about. Most take an anti-gay stance in the community; some on the extreme side. These groups may also take hard-line stances on other issues, such as obscenity or teen pregnancy, in order to create the false impression that they are just fundamentalist preachers, when in fact they are supremacists. The community may object to this kind of rhetoric on issues, but may not know there is a supremacy agenda behind it. In fact, in many cases, communities aren't aware of these groups until they are well entrenched. Like David Duke, a Ku Klux Klan leader who won a seat in the Louisiana legislature, supremacists have learned that they can gain power by looking like the rest of their host communities.

Not surprisingly, there is considerable crossover in membership from the KKK to Identity groups and some of the Militia and Patriot movements. These ties have given supremacists access to people with weapons and violent agendas. This is a problem that will continue well beyond the year 2000.

The "Christian" Identity Church is neither Christian nor does it identify with us. This "church" takes the Word of God and distorts it in order for them to preach a gospel of race hatred primarily directed at Jews and Afro-Americans. My purpose with this article is to:

1. Warn Christians not to even associate with this group,
2. Contend for the Christian Faith as we are told to do in Jude 3 "Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints."
3. Appeal to members of this group to repent and to receive the salvation of our Lord Jesus Christ.

This is best done by a white gentile Christian as myself. To those members of this "church" who choose to respond to me as "race-traitor" and such, I say this to you: if that seems to you to be a proper response, then do it! I count myself blessed each time I am reviled for the cause of Jesus Christ (Matt 5:11).

Regarding "locked hidden truths" in Scripture: Deut 29:29 'The secret things belong unto the LORD our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law."

BACKGROUND

The "christian" identity movement is an off-shoot of an erroneous teaching propogated in the 19th century by British race patriots who believed that Anglo-Saxons are direct descendants of the 10 lost tribes of Israel. This is interesting since God never lost 10 tribes of Israel. He knows exactly who and where they are. There is one Tribe of Israel that is not counted in the Book of Revelation, the Tribe of Dan (Rev 7:4-8). However, that exclusion has nothing to do with this erroneous teaching. This teaching, propagated by illustrious personages such as John Ruskin and others, laid a philosophical justification for the more sordid practices used in expanding the British Empire, including drug dealing in opium, trading in slaves and selling of armaments by the British East India Company and enforced by the British Navy.

The original intention of the teaching on the "10 Lost Tribes" was race-based. Not all who teach this error are racists. The teaching found it's way to the USA and is the lynchpin of the theology of the christian identity group.

The "Theology" of the "Christian" Identity Movement It takes no Christian theologian or even a real good Christian Apologist any effort to refute their teachings based on the Word of God. These are the Scriptures they misuse, their statements from these Scriptures and my responses to each one.

Genesis 9:21-25 "And (Noah) he drank of the wine, and was drunken; and he was uncovered within his tent. And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brethren without. And Shem and Japheth took a garment, and laid it upon both their shoulders, and went backward, and covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces were backward, and they saw not their father's nakedness. And Noah awoke from his wine, and knew what his younger son had done unto him. And he said, Cursed be Canaan; a servant of servants shall he be unto his brethren."

The identity teachers state that this scripture clearly teaches that the descendants of Ham, which include all Afro-Americans and black nations, are cursed by the Patriarch and are consigned to be servants (or slaves) to the others. The teachings generally proceed on with perjoratives referencing "mud races" etc.

Genesis 9:21-25 clearly teaches that both Ham and his son, Canaan, sinned. However, the patriarch, Noah, curses Canaan, not Ham. A grade-school student could easily follow this. The descendants of Ham have included some of the mightiest empires in the ancient world including Egypt and Ethiopia. The descendants of Canaan were judged under this curse when the children of Israel were sent into the promised Land and ordered by God Almighty to put the inhabitants to the sword. This judgment of God was based upon the immoral and idolatrous practices of the people of Canaan at that time. (Deut 7:24-26).

The next misused scripture by identity teachers is: John 8:42-44 "Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me. Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word. Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it." This scripture, they claim, is proof that Jesus Himself told the Jews that they were the offspring of Satan.

The obvious answer when read in context is that in John 8, Jesus is being rejected by the leaders of the Jews, the Pharisees and Sadducees, as the Messiah, who would be called the Son of David (Matt 22:41-45). That Jesus is speaking only to the leaders of the Jews of His day is made clear by a complete reading of John 6. In this chapter Jesus is shown as speaking to the people, to the Jews and to the Apostles. This may come as a shock to the identity teachers, but everyone in this chapter of John is a Jew. The people were Jewish, the Apostles were Jewish and the One speaking to them was presenting Himself to them as King of the Jews. This chapter should show us that, when the term "the Jews" is used later in John 8, Jesus is talking about the Jewish leadership of His day, not to all Jews everywhere at all other times.

Genesis 3:14-15 "And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life: And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel." Identity teachers claim that this is the origin of the Jews, the seed of the serpent.

Again it takes no Great effort in Christian Apologetics to explain that the seed of the serpent was a reference to the one who will follow after Jesus, proclaiming himself to be God (Dan 7:24-25). The Genesis scripture could in no way refer to the Jewish people since evil offspring were destroyed in the flood of Noah's day. Abraham was the progenitor of the Jews through whom God gave the child of promise, Isaac. To Isaac was born Jacob, later called Israel, from whom all Jews derive their identity.

Revelation 2:8-9 "And unto the angel of the church in Smyrna write; These things saith the first and the last, which was dead, and is alive; I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan."

Revelation 3:9 spoken to the Church of Philadelphia: "Behold, I will make them of the synagogue of Satan, which say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie; behold, I will make them to come and worship before thy feet, and to know that I have loved thee." Identity teachers use these passages to claim that all Jews and their synagogues are of Satan.

My response here might be slightly taxing to an identity teacher, but I'll try. The first passage refers to Jews in the city of Smyrna who took occasion with the Romans and the outlawed Christians to turn Christians into Roman authorities, have their property seized and receive 10% of the confiscation. Since these letters are believed to be a prophetic unfolding of Christian history down to the present, many Bible scholars believe that the Church of Philadelphia references the Christian Church around 1750 when serious missionary activity began, thus fulfilling Jesus' command to us in Acts 1:8. At that time there were, and still are, gentiles, who claim to be Jews and are not just as the scripture indicates. In the ceremonies of freemasonry within the higher degrees, gentiles regularly reinact rituals based on fables about Solomon's Temple and dress as Jews during these rituals. Freemasonry had a consolidation around 1717, within the same time frame as the beginning of the Church of Philadelphia period. When reading these scriptures, all we need to do is to pay attention to the wording, "which say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie"

As to God's warning to us regarding the Jews, the Holy Spirit speaks clearly through the Apostle to the gentiles, Paul (A Jew from the Tribe of Benjamin)

Rom 11:17-27 "And if some of the branches were broken off, and you, being a wild olive tree, were grafted in among them, and with them became a partaker of the root and fatness of the olive tree, do not boast against the branches. But if you do boast, remember that you do not support the root, but the root supports you. You will say then, "Branches were broken off that I might be grafted in." Well said. Because of unbelief they were broken off, and you stand by faith. Do not be haughty, but fear. For if God did not spare the natural branches, He may not spare you either.

Therefore consider the goodness and severity of God: on those who fell, severity; but toward you, goodness, if you continue in His goodness. Otherwise you also will be cut off. And they also, if they do not continue in unbelief, will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again. 24 For if you were cut out of the olive tree which is wild by nature, and were grafted contrary to nature into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these, who are natural branches, be grafted into their own olive tree? 25 For I do not desire, brethren, that you should be ignorant of this mystery, lest you should be wise in your own opinion, that blindness in part has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in. And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written: "The Deliverer will come out of Zion, And He will turn away ungodliness from Jacob; For this is My covenant with them,When I take away their sins."

NKJV As concerning the gospel, they are enemies for your sakes: but as touching the election, they are beloved for the fathers' sakes."

Speaking to any of you who have been influenced by Christian Identity teachers, the Word of God is clear: Matt 5:21-22 "Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment: But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire." 1 John 2: 9-11 "He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now. He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him. But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes.

I am sure that you are saying by now that Jews are not my brothers. Think again! There is a sovereign move of God today whereby many Jews are calling upon Yeshua (Jesus) as their Messiah (Lord & Saviour) for salvation and are born again into the Body of Christ and referred to not as Christians but as Messianic Jews.

Galatians 3:28 "There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus."

Revelation 7:9 "After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands;

The Jews 2000 years ago did not kill Jesus. We all did with our sins! Though He was killed, He lives today and offers us His salvation. 1Co 5:7 "Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us:"

I beseech each of you to come out from this movement that preaches hatred and death into the eternal life offered to us by our Lord Jesus Christ. Please repent of your hatred and turn to the Author of Life, Jesus Christ.

Terminology:

The term "Christian Identity" has two distinct meanings:

Anglo-Israelism (a.k.a. British-Israelism): A theological belief that the Anglo-Saxon, Celtic, Scandinavian, Germanic and associated cultures are the racial descendents of the tribes of Israel. Thus, by extension, Americans and Canadians, are composed of the descendents of the ancient Israelites of the Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament).

Racist, Christian-based faith groups: A number of small, extremely conservative Fundamentalist Christian denominations which have accepted Anglo-Israelism, and grafted it to racist, sexist, anti-communist and homophobic beliefs. They view the Jewish people as descendants of Satan. Followers tend to be involved in political movements opposing gun control, equal rights to gays and lesbians, and militia movements.

The second meaning has become dominant in the U.S. and Canada. We will use it for the remainder of this essay.

History:

The Christian Identity movement is a movement of many extremely conservative Christian churches and religious organizations, extreme right wing political groups and survival groups. Some are independent; others are loosely interconnected. According to Professor Michael Barkun, one of the leading experts in the Christian Identity movement, "This virulent racist and anti-Semitic theology, which is practiced by over 50,000 people in the United States alone, is prevalent among many right wing extremist groups and has been called the 'glue' of the racist right."

The largest Christian Identity movement has traditionally been the Ku Klux Klan which was reorganized in 1915 by William Simmons, a Christian pastor. He had been inspired by the film The Birth of a Nation which portrayed the KKK as a champion of white civilization. The KKK slid into obscurity by the second World War, but was revitalized in the mid 1950's as a reaction to enforced racial integration in the southern US.

Quoting the FBI's Megiddo Report on domestic terrorism: 5

"Wesley Swift is considered the single most significant figure in the early years of the Christian Identity movement in the United States. He popularized it in the right-wing by 'combining British-Israelism, a demonic anti-Semitism, and political extremism.' 6 He founded his own church in California in the mid 1940s where he could preach this ideology. In addition, he had a daily radio broadcast in California during the 1950s and 60s, through which he was able to proclaim his ideology to a large audience. With Swift’s efforts, the message of his church spread, leading to the creation of similar churches throughout the country. In 1957, the name of his church was changed to The Church of Jesus Christ Christian, which is used today by Aryan Nations (AN) churches."

"One of Swift’s associates, William Potter Gale, was far more militant than Swift and brought a new element to Christian Identity churches. He became a leading figure in the anti-tax and paramilitary movements of the 1970s and 80s. There are numerous Christian Identity churches that preach similar messages and some espouse more violent rhetoric than others, but all hold fast to the belief that Aryans are God’s chosen race."

Other current organizations which follow Christian Identity beliefs are: American Nazi Party; Aryan Nations; Church of Jesus Christ Christian, Aryan Nations; Confederate Hammerskins; Jubilee, National Association for the Advancement of White People; The Order; radical modern offshoots of the original Posse Comitatus; Scriptures for America, White Aryan Resistance (WAR) and White Separatist Banner. Many small groups fade in and out of existence frequently.

Beliefs about Armageddon:

The leadership of the more radical "CI" groups advocate, but do not themselves engage in violence against Jews, Blacks, and Homosexuals now, rather than waiting for Armageddon to begin.

The Watchman web site contained a quote from a Christian Identity leader which gives a flavor of their style of rhetoric, and their predictions for the future of North America:

"We are going to build the Kingdom of our God on this continent if we have to turn it into a Bosnia first! Death may find you in front of your one-eyed church of Satan or in the filthy bingo parlors where you worship your devil god, but be sure that you will not escape the consuming fire that is the real baptism of the Holy Ghost, The God of Racial Israel.2

Other beliefs:

Such groups have hijacked the benign religious concept of Anglo-Israelism, (also known as British-Israelism). The latter teach that the British (and by extension Americans, Canadians, and others) are the spiritual and literal descendants of the 10 lost tribes of ancient Israel. After the invasion of the Northern kingdom of Israel, the Assyrians scattered the indigenous population. They resettled in the Caucasus Mountains, and later drifted into Europe. The Christian Identity movement extended that theory and generated their own profoundly racist doctrine. They believe that the white race (or the "Aryan peoples" or "White Anglo Saxon Protestants", or the "British Peoples", or "White Americans") represent God's chosen people, as mentioned in the Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament). They have taken these beliefs in an extreme direction to justify their hatred of Blacks, Jews, homosexuals and communists.

Some beliefs held in common by many Christian Identity (CI) groups are:

• A very conservative interpretation of the Christian Bible. This has led to a hatred of homosexuality and of homosexuals and a rejection of followers of other religions.
• A view of the white race, the "Adamic race" or "True Israelites" as superior. Other races are the "Satanic spawn" of Cain. This leads naturally to a hatred of Blacks, Native Americans, and immigrants from "non-Aryan" lands
• That Adam and Eve were white. Many other "pre-Adamic" and non-white people were already in existence when Adam was created. This leads to the belief that Anglo-Saxon Protestants are the "true identity" of God's chosen people of the Hebrew Scriptures. Non-whites are considered sub-human. These Biblical beliefs confirm their concept of white racial superiority. As a minimum, they call for racial separation; some call for extermination of what the call the "mud races" (non-white races).
• That the Commandment which forbids adultery does not refer to extra-marital sexual relationships. Rather, it forbids "racial adultery"; i.e. inter-racial marriages. Their reasoning is that the 10th Commandment which forbids coveting one's neighbor's possessions already bans adultery; one of those "possessions" is the neighbor's wife. And, God would not have repeated Himself.
• They consider themselves to be the direct descendants Adam's son Abel and thus are God's chosen people. They regard the Jewish people as having descended from Cain. Thus the Jewish belief that they are the chosen people is invalid. This has led to an extreme anti-Semitism within the Christian Identity movement.

They frequently promote complex conspiracy theories. For example, 1

"Mainstream Christianity is acting in concert with the Jews through a group called "Cult Awareness Network" which is a front for the ADL [Jewish Anti-Defamation League] to destroy 'The Family'". (The latter is an international group of small intentional Fundamentalist Christian communities which has been called a cult by the Counter-cult Movement).

The "New Age movement can best be described as a 'Counterfeit Identity'. It is being raised up by Jews to provide a substitute for the real truth."

"..all that is commonly known as modern Christianity is the creation of the Jews."

Recent developments:

• 1999-FEB-4: FBI director Louis Freeh warned that: "With the coming of the next millennium, some religious/apocalyptic groups or individuals may turn to violence as they seek to achieve dramatic effects to fulfill their prophecies." He also talked about another disturbing religious trend: "Many white supremacist groups adhere to the Christian Identity belief system, which holds that the world is on the verge of a final apocalyptic struggle...and teaches that the white race is the chosen race of God." He warned that in late 1999, some Christian Identity members might prepare for their anticipated Armageddon by committing robberies to finance their activities. Director Freeh said that the government, Jews and non-whites are likely targets. 4
• 1999-AUG-13: Women Leaders Online reported that a number of the most serious urban U.S. terrorism acts were perpetrated by members of Christian Identity groups, including:
  • Eric Rudolph, a suspect in bombings at a Birmingham AL abortion clinic and at the Atlanta Olympics
  • Arsonists who torched three synagogues in Sacramento CA in 1999-JUL
  • Murder of a gay couple near Redding, CA
  • Buford O'Neal Furrow Jr, suspect in the murder of a postal service employee and the attempted murder of 5 individuals at a Jewish community center in Los Angeles CA in 1999-AUG.
  • "and many other violent crimes across the country."
• In addition, three men who were charged with two bank robberies, and three bombings in Spokane, Washington in 1996-APR were linked to the CI movement. The crimes were apparently motivated by a need to raise money for the group.
• These terrorist acts appear to be planned and executed by individual Christian Identity followers, and not by Identity churches or the movement itself. Because of the freedom of speech and religion guaranteed in the 1st Amendment of the Constitution, the FBI is prohibited from general monitoring and infiltrating of Christian Identity and similar groups.
• 1999-OCT-20: The FBI announced completion of their Project Megiddo report. This followed an intensive study of the possibility of domestic terrorism during the millennium. It included a section on the Christian Identity movement. 5
