Posted 10-22-2001

Military Check Point a problem needing correction

Posted 10-16-2001
The military has set up a military check point on Olding road at Austin Dr. which is forcing civilians to stop and present I.D. and possibly submit to a search of the vehicle. I fear that this is an example of profiling at it's best since they do not search all vehicles, just those that look suspecious. The PROBLEM? It is the only entrance to gain access to the Public Health Department. For marginalized citizens and those already afraid of the presence of authority this checkpoint effectivley eliminates free access to public service. The KHRN is working with Phyllis Mann from Kitsap County Department of Emergency Management, Commissiooner Chris Endresen, and Dr. Scott Lindquest our Public Health Officer, to find a solution to the problem.
